Sally Powell graduated from Canterbury School of Fine Arts with a Diploma in Fine Arts majoring in Design in 1958. She worked as a designer for a glass company for three years then later became a working member of the Canterbury Society of Arts in the early seventies. Powell has held many solo shows including at the Canterbury Society of Arts, the Moray Gallery, Dunedin and four very successful shows at the Bealey Gallery, Christchurch. She was included in the Canterbury Exhibition which toured three Japanese cities in 1975, and her works have been included in the Profile Gallery, Melbourne. Powell was awarded 2nd equal for the National Bank Award for Watercolours in 1976 and runner-up in the Ashburton Art Awards.
