Ted Dutch was born in London in 1928, growing up during the Great Depression and World War Two. He attended St. Martin's School of Art in London and then worked as a film animator and graphic artist. He was a founding member of London's Graphic Arts Society and was elected a fellow of London's Royal Society of Arts at the age of 23. He immigrated to New Zealand in 1951 and initially worked as a graphic designer in the screen-printing industry. In the early 1960s he began producing fine art screenprints after which he began painting and experimenting with ceramic sculpture. As well as exhibiting commercially in Auckland, he held public exhibitions in the Hawkes Bay Museum Art Gallery in 2007 and the Gus Fisher Gallery in Auckland in 2008. He was invited to exhibit at Expo 70 in Japan in 1970. He continued working until shortly before his death in Auckland in January 2008.
