Born in Melbourne in 1869, James Quinn studied at the National Gallery School under Folingsby from 1886 to 1893 and in that year was awarded the Travelling Scholarship. Studied in Paris at the Academies Julian and the Ecole Des Beaux Arts under Laurens from 1894 to 1902, after which he moved to London. A member of the Royal Institute of Painters and the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and exhibited at the Royal Academy. He established a reputation as a portrait painter, but returned to Australia in 1937 after the death of one of his sons. His career didn't progress after this until a retrospective exhibition of his work was held by the Victorian College of the Arts in 1980.
We have records of art auction sales by James Quinn from 1967 and in total 150 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 103 (69%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $18,000 for Daffodils sold by Sotheby's in November 1991. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023.
