Born in Bowden, South Australia in 1876, and after leaving school Lever studied under James Ashton at his Norwood art school. He was a charter member of the Adelaide Easel Club in 1892. He travelled to England in 1899 and studied and worked there and in France. In 1912 he went to live in New York where he became a successful marine painter, later moving to Massachusetts. From 1919 to 1931, Lever taught art classes at the Art Students League of New York. He travelled and painted in the Eastern United States but in his later life his career as a marine artist was halted by arthritis. He died in New York 1958.
