Judy Drew was born in 1951, and graduated from Melbourne's Prahran College of Art in 1970. Between 1976 – 1984 she lived in Bougainville Island and Papua New Guinea. There, she honed her artistic skills, working in all mediums: oil, acrylic, watercolour and gouache, but felt a connection with pastels, from the time she purchased her first set. She studied the pastel artists of the Post Impressionist period, particularly Degas' portraiture and was drawn to its delicate line work, and tendency towards understatement and spare use of colour. She also works with charcoal. She has won numerous awards including the Omega Contemporary Art Prize and the Portrait Prize from Melbourne Savage Club. She has also had works included in the International Exhibition of Pastels in France. As well as her own work, Judy Drew regularly conducts public workshops in portrait drawing and pastel throughout Australia.
