Born in Portugal in 1853, Loureiro was a world-renowned artist.who studied at the Royal Academy in Lisbon, also in Rome and Paris, and exhibited for three years at the Old Salon before arriving in Melbourne in 1884, where he began to teach and paint. He was awarded the Prix de Rome by the Royal Academy, Lisbon. With Roberts, Streeton, Conder, Mather, Catani, etc.,he formed the Australian Artists Association. He taught art in Melbourne, and after a long period in Australia he returned to Portugal where he died in 1932. Loureiro's work is represented in the National Gallery of Victoria.
