Born in Scotland in 1870, Walter Meston moved with his family to New Zealand in 1884. He arrived in Western Australia in 1897 and established a sign writing business first in Kalgoorlie and later in Perth. A watercolourist and teacher, he was largely a self taught artist. Meston was a member of the West Australian Society of Arts and Crafts, and exhibited his paintings there from about 1898 to 1933.

The earliest auction listing we have for Walter Meston is in 1991 and in total 44 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 28 (64%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $61,000 for Our Heritage 1924 (A View of the Swan River from Kings Park) sold by Mossgreen Auctions in June 2015.
