Born in Scotland in 1849, Herkis Nisbet is believed to be a brother of the famous Scottish artists Pollock Sinclair Nisbett and Robert Buchan Nisbett. He lived in Australia for a seven year period from 1865 and made two brief visits in the 1880s and 1890s. He was also a prolific writer and illustrator.
