James Lawson Balfour was born in 1870 in Melbourne, the son of artist James Balfour. He studied in London as a portrait painter and illustrator of books and exhibited Royal Academy 1898. He arrived in Christchurch 1900 and exhibited with Canterbury society of arts until 1906. On moving to Sydney he became a member of the Royal Art Society.

The total number of works by James Balfour offered for sale by auction since 1969 is 109, of which 67 (61%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $37,950 for Sunday Morning sold by Sotheby's in April 1997. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023. Works by James Balfour are held by the Art Gallery of NSW, National Gallery of Australia and a further two major public national galleries (see list below).
