Born at Kaniva, Victoria, in 1889 after schooling he was apprenticed in lithographic drawing to printing company, Sands & McDougall and studied in the evenings at and later National Gallery of Victoria. under Meldrum. His first Melbourne exhibition in 1927 enhanced his reputation. In 1937 he moved to the United States. He established an art colony in New York and in 1945 won the Audubon Artists' Hollander Prize and in the 1950s was elected a fellow of the London Royal Society of Arts and of the Staten Island Institute of Arts and Sciences. He died on 11 September 1959 at Staten Island. Although he is represented in major Australian Galleries most of his works were sold privately in the United States.

We have records of art auction sales by Percy Leason from 1967 and in total 220 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 154 (70%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $16,800 for Stan Morriwalka (Loycurrie) 1929 sold by Bonhams & Goodman in April 2007. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023. Works by Percy Leason are held by the Art Gallery of Western Australia, National Gallery of Australia and a further seven major public national galleries (see list below).
