Robert Hagan was born at Murwillumbah in 1947. After finishing school in 1965, Hagan gained an economics degree at the University of Newcastle, with post-graduate qualifications in education. During these years he intermittently contributed artwork to the university newspaper. Hagan's first serious effort in art was while he was teaching at Wauchope, where he spent much time drawing farm structures in ball point pen. After moving to Sydney in 1970, Hagan began exhibiting black and white work at the Woollahra Galleries followed by an exhibition at the Holdsworth Gallery with two of his brothers titled "Beatles of the Brush". From this time on Hagan worked in oils and exhibited primarily in Sydney on a semi-professional basis. Until 1978 his work was what he called "white canvas paintings", largely animal and bird subjects on a background of white canvas. He also took commissions for portraits in biro.
