Darryn George was born in 1970. Of Maori descent, he completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Canterbury in 1993, a Diploma of Teaching at the Christchurch College of Education in 1994 and a Master of Fine Arts at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in 1998. Working mainly with oil, acrylic and automotive paint, he creates symbolic geometric abstractions inspired by his heritage. As well as exhibiting commercially throughout New Zealand and in Melbourne, public exhibitions of his work have been held at Te Papa Tongarewa, Wellington, Kaitiaki at Pataka Art and Museum, Christchurch Art Gallery and Wellington City Gallery. For the Christchurch Art Gallery exhibition in 2008 he created and installed PULSE a 300 square metre work over 50m long. In 2000 he was a finalist in the Wallace Art Award and in 2020 was the Wallace Arts Trust Second Award Winner.
