Born in 1935, Max Gimblett is a New Zealand born abstract painter who has lived and worked in the USA since 1962 and is now based in New York. He has maintained a close interest in the work of New Zealand artists and in 1980-81, with the aid of a Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council Grant he opened a studio in Auckland to demonstrate working methods practised in New York. He was appointed to the honorary position of Visiting Professor of Art to the National Institute of Creative Arts and Industries at Auckland University in 2003. In 2015 he was named an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to art.

Max Gimblett is one of the most prolific of the artists listed in our database, with the number of works offered for sale by auction since 1992 of 621, of which 438 (71%) were sold.
