Born in 1828 in Yorkshire, Thomas Monkhouse arrived in Auckland in 1863. He decorated locally made furniture which was displayed at the New Zealand Exhibition in Dunedin in 1865. Working in watercolour he painted landscapes before moving on to Melbourne in the 1880s. In 1887 he became the first instructor of painting and drawing at the Working Men's College in Melbourne.
