Born in Geelong, Victoria in 1924, Arch Cuthbertson was awarded a Diploma of Fine Art from Royal Melbourne Technical College in 1951 and was awarded a Fellowship from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology for 1969/70. He was an art teacher at teachers colleges in Geelong and Ballarat from 1956 to 1968 and Senior Lecturer at Deakin University from 1974 to 1984. Included in the prizes he has won for his paintings are the Geelong Prize for Watercolour in in 1964 and the Swan Hill Art Gallery Prize in 1988. A modernist artist, he held at least 30 solo exhibitions from 1961 to 2000 in Melbourne, Geelong, Adelaide and Sydney.
