Born in Sydney in 1949, Idris Murphy studied in at the National Art School in Sydney in 1971 and Winchester School of the Art in Southampton, England from 1975 to 1979. A painter, printmaker and teacher, he held his first solo exhibition in Sydney in 1972 and since then has exhibited extensively, predominately in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. Works by Idris Murphy have been included in the Sulman and Wynne prizes and he was Artist in Residence at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in 1983. In 1982, Murphy was a lecturer at the University of Wollongong, NSW and in 1997 he became the Head of Drawing at the National Art School, Sydney.
