Born in Queensland, Joan Dent (nee Lintott) was educated at PLC Pymble. She studied art at East Sydney Technical College and had private lessons from J. S. Watkins & Joshua Smith. Her first job was with "The Bulletin", using a variety of pen names: Lintott (her maiden name), Deirdre (for fun), Neville (first husband), Dent (second husband), and for her very successful commercial work Anne Drew she went on to illustrate literally hundreds of cartoons, pictures, poems, articles & stories. She contributed regularly to various papers & magazines including Fashion & Society, the Woman’s Mirror, the Woman’s Weekly and the New Zealand Mirror. For Angus & Robertson she designed book covers. Joan had many exhibitions solo and mixed including participaing in the Australia wide Peter Stuyvesant Traveling Exhibition of 1975. Her work was shown in the Art Gallery of New South Wales Archibald Prize, Wynne Prize, the Sulman Prize and the Portia Geach Memorial Award in Sydney. A noted portraitist, her sitters came from all walks of life.
