Born in England in 1948, James Ross arrived in New Zealand in 1959. He studied at Elam School, Auckland University. His work is described by Michael Dunn in 'A Concise History of New Zealand Painting' as hovering between 'abstraction and figuration between painting and relief'. In 2007 The Red Studio, a retrospective of his work was held at Auckland University's Gus Fisher Gallery,
