Born in Moreland, Victoria in 1871, Jones studied under Walter Withers. He was an amateur landscape artist working oils, and painting in his own time while working for the Victorian Railways. He first exhibited in Melbourne in 1939. He died in 1960 in Melbourne, and a retrosptive exhibition of his work was held in the Melbourne suburb of Armadale in 1972.

The highest price recorded for the artist is $5,500 for On the Road to Heidelberg sold by Leonard Joel in July 1988.
