Born in Melbourne in 1928, Ernest Smith studied art in Sydney, Melbourne and overseas in Italy and USA. A painter, gallery director and critic, he was art critic for Adelaide's 'Sunday Mail' and also lectured in art history in several overseas universities. Smith's work is represented in the National Gallery of Victoria and the Geelong Art Gallery.
