Virginia Cuppaidge was born in Brisbane in 1943, and studied at the Orban School in Sydney from 1960 to 1962 and then moved moved to New York in 1969 to pursue her commitment to abstract expressionism. In 1965 Cuppaidge received her Masters of Fine Art from the Mary White School of Art in Sydney and then moved to live in New York in 1969. Since 1965 she has held thirty-three solo exhibitions in Australia, USA and Canada. In 1975 she was awarded the MacDowell Colony Fellowship and in 1977 was awarded the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation award in painting. From 1992 to 2000 she was Associate Professor in Painting at Lehman College, Bronx, New York City, USA and form 2001 to 2008 was Adjunct Associate Professor at Borough of Manhattan Community College, New York City, USA.
