Born in Brighton, Victoria in 1878 Harley Griffiths studied at the National Gallery School in Melbourne from 1894 to 1899. He exhibited with the N S W Society of Artists from 1907 and his work was included in the exhibition 150 Years of Australian Art in Sydney in 1938. In Sydney, he shared a studio with Max Meldrum and was joint manager, with Julian Ashton and Hardy Wilson, of the Fine Arts Society, Sydney from 1911 to 1914. Painting in oils, his work included landscapes, portraiture, still life and floral studies. A retrospective of his work Harley Griffiths Snr: Works on Paper was shown at the Castlemaine Art Gallery and the McClelland Gallery in 1991.
