Born in Latvia in 1910, Margarita Stipnieks studied at the Academy of Art, Riga, and arrived in Australia in 1950 after exhibiting in Europe and the USA. Working in oil, ink, pastel and watercolour, she was a floral and figurative artist and held solo exhibitions in Melbourne and Adelaide from 1955. She was elected a Fellow of the Royal South Australian Society of Arts, and was appointed a visiting lecturer at the South Australian School of Art.
