Born in Nelson, New Zealand in 1912, Leo Benseman was well known as a painter, publisher, illustrator and composer. The winner of the 1969 Arts Council travel grant he studied graphic design and typography in France. He was a member of the Canterbury School of painters, and of "The Group", that broke away from the Canterbury Society of Arts. He became a full time artist after his retirement in 1978 untill his death in 1986.

We have records of art auction sales by Leo Bensemann from 1989 and in total 171 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 102 (60%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $79,865 for Takaka Stonehenge sold by Webb's in September 2022. This year 6 works have been offered for sale. Works by Leo Bensemann are held by the Suter Art Gallery, Christchurch Art Gallery and a further three major public national galleries (see list below).
