John Middleditch was born at Port Chalmers in 1906 and received his early education in Dunedin, where he studied at King Edward Technical College. He trained as an engineering draughtsman and worked in this field for some years while pursuing woodcarving and drawing as hobbies. In 1945, at the end of his war service, Middleditch began studies at the Dunedin School of Art. In 1950 he was a founding member of the 'New Group' of artists, with whom he exhibited in woodcarving, oils and watercolours. In 1962 he became a full-time sculptor working primarily in wood, bronze, copper and aluminium.
