Born in Malvern, Victoria in 1903, Griffin is known for his colour prints of birds and animals. He studied at the National Gallery of Victoria Art School in Melbourne from 1919 to 1923 and from 1936 to 1937 he taught art at Scotch College in Melbourne, and drawing and teaching at RMIT from 1937 to 1940. He was an appointed official war artist during World War II. After the war he taught drawing at National Gallery of Victoria Art School and then returned to RMIT as Senior Lecturer in Art from 1954 to 1968.
