Born in Victoria in 1943, Stewart Merrett went to RMIT and graduated with honours in illustration and design worked as a designer and art director. After travelling and working overseas, he opened a design studio in Melbourne and held several solo exhibitions, made lecture tours and conducted textile workshops and published several books on the technique of applique. In his later years he retired to the Victorian country town of Clunes.
