Born in New Zealand in 1887, Wakelin studied at the Wellington Technical School before coming to Australia in 1912. He studied further in Sydney and Europe. On his return to Australia in 1925 he became a leader of the modern school, and in the same year held an exhibition of works influenced by Cezanne. A large retrospective of his work was held at the Art gallery of NSW in 1967
