Born in Christchurch in 1928, David Graham began painting seriously in in 1958. He moved from producing landscape studies early in his career to producing works based on grid structures. He exhibited in Hays Art Competitions in 1962, 1963, and 1966 and at the Canterbury Society of Arts. He taught at Christchurch Teachers College in 1967.
